Soul Food to Go

Coffee and whole-grain croissants... freshly-squeezed fruit juices with no sugar added... bowls of oriental noodles in coconut-chili sauce... vegetable sticks and dips... tuna salad and Tandoori chicken sandwiches... eighteen varieties of sushi... or how about the “magic cabbage soup” for starters?

It’s a rainy day in Salzburg today, and I’m sitting at a tiny table inside “Indigo”, a health-cum-fast-food bar about five minute’s walk around the corner from the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born.

Clean, minimalist interiors greet you when you come in. The food bar is on the left by the door, and a table and banquettes are tucked in the opposite corner. Narrow counters and bar stools line up one wall and the middle of the room – and that’s it. Not a place for two-hour lunches and tete-a-tetes, just an urban refuge for those looking for quick, filling, vitamin-rich meals with no preservatives added.

As I dig into my bowl of egg noodles with sauteed mixed vegetables, the lunchtime crowd drops in - students, harried-looking yuppies, shop assistants, and even the occasional tourist. Some of them fill up the tables, most of them order soul food to go.

Looking over the menu, I notice that there’s hardly any alcohol here – but ten kinds of organic juices with flavors like apple, grape, carrot, wheat grass and aloe vera. You also have a choice of six different “functional teas” to cleanse, beautify, relax, warm and rejuvenate your stressed-out body.

The place sounds more like a spa than a restaurant, but that’s exactly the point. For calorie-conscious travellers, this is a healthy alternative to the golden arches around the corner.
